Is your business ready for the “end of Internet Explorer”?
June 15, 2022 is the “deadline” for Microsoft to stop supporting most versions of Internet Explorer.
IE retirement is not the same as death.
Slowly but relentlessly, Microsoft has been pushing users to abandon IE and switch to Microsoft Explorer. In Windows 11, released in October 2021, Microsoft Edge replaced IE as the default browser.
Starting today, Microsoft will no longer support the IE 11 browser on some Windows 10 versions, namely: Windows 10 Client SKU (20H2 and later) and Windows 10 IoT (20H2 and later).
After a certain period of time (Microsoft did not specify when) “IE will be permanently disabled on all devices with IE deactivation scope through future Windows updates. Microsoft did not specify when “IE will be permanently disabled on all devices with a Windows platform within the scope of IE disablement.”
“For supported operating systems, IE 11 will continue to receive security updates and technical support for the life of the Windows version on which it is installed,” the company explained, but noted that “the future of IE on Windows 10 belongs to Microsoft Edge. “
According to Microsoft, the Edge browser is more flexible in responding to security vulnerabilities and offers modern features that improve productivity. It also has IE mode, which uses Edge’s Chromium engine for modern sites and IE’s Trident MSHTML engine for older sites.
Edge’s IE mode includes support for various IE features (e.g., ActiveX controls).
Switch to Edge’s IE mode, but do not remove IE!
According to a survey conducted by IT asset management provider Lansweeper (which included more than 9 million devices from 33,000 organizations), 47 percent of PCs need to be upgraded to Microsoft Edge by the June 15 deadline, and only 21 percent of PCs are running the latest version of Windows 10 (version 21H2).
Lansweeper noted, “From our perspective, with only one in five Windows 10 devices using the latest version, it’s not entirely surprising that the IE retirement will affect so many devices.”
“There are many possible reasons for enterprises to delay upgrades, including being more conservative, having more pressing issues to deal with, or simply not being able to understand the version of the operating system they are running.”
Microsoft warned enterprises must not choose to avoid or skip Windows updates in order to retain IE11, which contains critical operating system security patches.
Instead, Microsoft noted that enterprises can choose to switch to Microsoft Edge IE mode, this way the technical support can continue until “at least 2029”. However, Microsoft also pointed out that to make Edge’s IE mode work properly, enterprises should not uninstall or remove IE11, because it will make the former stop working.
