The Ladbrokes Christmas Festival horse racing event is an annual enthralling jump race that gets held annually after Christmas at the Kempton Park racehorse in Surrey, UK.
This two-day event host some of the most exciting jump races on the calendar, including the King George VI chase, the Desert Orchid Chase and the Christmas Hurdle. The “King George Chase” first started in February 1937 and was named in Honour of the new king. It is now considered the second most prestigious race in the UK, Eclipsed only by the Cheltenham Gold Cup race. The Desert Orchid Chase is a grade 2 race that is run over a distance of 2 miles. This race will be open to horses aged four years and over, with 12 fences to be jumped in total. It is usually held on the second day of the festival. The event was named after the great “Desert Orchid”, who had made a name at Kempton Park by winning four of the King George VI Races. The event replaced the Old Castleford Chase on the racing calendar when it was first held in 2006. Some punters flock to Kempton Park exclusively for this event as it takes place on the 27th of December, the day after King George VI Chase.
The Kempton Park race track is the only all-weather right-handed race course in the UK. The track is oval-shaped and boasts a distance of either 8 or 10 furlongs, depending on which inner track is being used. The surface of the track is made from a synthetic poly track, and it’s considered to be deeper in comparison to other all-weather tracks.
The Christmas Festival is considered the Jewel of Kempton Park and boasts 12 top-quality races over the course of two days.
