Roulette: The difference between variations
It’s hard to believe that a game loved and played regularly by many players around the world, known now as a casino classic, at some point in our history, never existed. What’s more, the main component of the game was in fact invented by accident. We are of course talking about Roulette and its iconic wheel!
During its lifetime, spanning many centuries, Roulette has seen players gather around in many forms, whether at one of the land-based casino venues around the world, or on one of its many tables found online, such as at griffoncasino.com, for example. There are many ways you can grab a spin of the wheel and place a wager on where they predict the ball will land next.
Over the years of its existence, two variations of the game have stood centre stage, allowing players to choose which variation of the casino classic they’d like to play. With this in mind, we wanted to teach you more about the differences and similarities between the variations.

How to play
Before we delve into the differences and similarities, let’s quickly run through a rough guide of how to play.
To play you’ll need:
- A Roulette table
- A Roulette wheel
- A small white ball
- A dealer
- Betting chips
A game of Roulette is always started with the dealer of the table opening the betting window. It’s here where players around the table can place a wager down on their predictions, if they wish. Once the dealer announces the closing of the betting window, no more bets will be allowed.
It’s then, and only then, that the game will get underway and the iconic wheel will be spun. As the pocketed wheel begins to gain momentum the dealer will drop the small white ball into play. Whether playing online or in person, the players will have to wait in anticipation for the ball to stop bouncing and the wheel to come to a complete halt.
When the wheel stops spinning, the dealer will announce the winning pocket and anyone who correctly predicted the game’s outcome will be awarded a payout. All remaining betting chips will be raked off the table, in preparation for a new game to commence.
Roulette Variations
You may have heard of the two variations of Roulette, but may not know what the difference is between them. The two variations are called European Roulette and American Roulette.
With both the wheel and corresponding table looking very similar, there are only three things that separate them.
- The American variation contains a double zero as well as a single zero, whereas the European only has a single zero.
- The house edge is higher within the American variation at 5.26%. The European house edge is 2.7%. This is due to the American variation having an extra zero pocket.
- There’s one bet that can be placed on the American table, and not the European, called a Five Numbered Bet, which consists of players placing a betting chip on numbers 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3.
Apart from this, there are no other major differences between the variations. Which do you prefer to play – European or American?
