Speaking to Congress, VOLODYMYR Zelenskyy compared Putin to Hitler while insisting Ukraine needs more guns.
The war leader was greeted with a standing ovation as he defiantly said Ukraine is “alive and alive” despite Putin’s invasion.
In a stirring speech at the Capitol, Zelenskyi appealed to Americans, citing former US President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who served between 1933 and 1945, and the efforts to liberate Europe from Nazi occupation.
He said: “Just like the brave American soldiers who gave their lives and repelled Hitler’s forces on Christmas 1944, the brave Ukrainian soldiers are doing the same this Christmas.”
Zelensky sought more US support for Kiev’s war effort and urged lawmakers to continue funding the fight against Russia.
Dressed in khaki, he said: “Your money is not charity, it is an investment in global security and democracy, which we will manage in the most responsible way.”
However, the comedian and president said artillery was “not enough” and said the US could “speed up” Ukraine’s victory over Moscow.
In English he said: “We have artillery, yes, thank you. Is that enough? Not really.
“To ensure that Bakhmut is not just a fortress holding back the Russian army – but for the Russian army to withdraw completely – more guns and shells are needed.
“Russia could really stop its aggression if it wanted to. But you can hasten our victory, I know that.”
The US has sent about $45 billion in aid to Kyiv as Europe’s biggest land dispute since World War II drags on, killing tens of thousands of people, driving millions from their homes and laying waste to cities.
Joe Biden also unveiled another $1.85 billion in military aid to Ukraine on Wednesday, including a Patriot air defense system to help it repel Russian missile barrage.
But some Republicans, who will take control of the House from Democrats on Jan. 3, have raised concerns about the price.
They could withhold billions of dollars in war aid starting next month.
But Zelenskyy drew a thunderous ovation on Wednesday when he declared that Ukraine will “never surrender” and warned that the stakes in the conflict are greater than just his nation’s fate.
He said: “This fight cannot be ignored in the hope that the ocean or something else will provide protection.”
Zelenskyy thanked the US for its support and said it was a “privilege” to speak to Americans.
He said: “It is a great honor for me to be in the US Congress and to address you and all Americans.
“Contrary to all doomsday scenarios, Ukraine has not fallen. Ukraine is alive and performing.
“We defeated Russia in the battle for the heads of the world.”
Zelenskyy went on to say that the Russians “will only have a chance to be free if they defeat the Kremlin in their minds”.
The war leader told Congress: “Yet the struggle goes on and we must defeat the Kremlin on the battlefield.
“These struggles are not just for territory, the struggle is not just for the life, liberty and security of Ukrainians or any other nation trying to conquer Russia.
“This fight will determine what world our children and grandchildren will live in, and then their children and grandchildren.
“It will decide whether it will be a democracy of Ukrainians and Americans for all.”
Zelenskyy also reminded members that Russia has an “advantage” in the military with weapons, planes and ammunition.
At the end of his speech, he presented the Congress with a Ukrainian flag given to him by defenders at the front in Bakhmut.
Just a day before landing in the US, Zelenskyy visited the war-torn city.
It comes after Zelensky was welcomed to the White House by Biden and his wife Jill on his first foreign trip since Putin’s February invasion.
The US leader stood alongside Zelensky to urge Americans and the world to continue supporting Kyiv in 2023 as the Ukrainian leader made his first foreign visit during the war.
Biden said, “As we head into the New Year, it is important for the American people and for the world to hear directly from you, Mr. President, about Ukraine’s struggle and the need to continue to stand together through 2023.”
The US President added that he did not see NATO or the European Union as united as in Ukraine.
Zelenskyj said: “We are discussing sanctions and legal pressure on the terrorist country Russia.”
The President of Ukraine previously presented Biden with a medal offered by a captain of a HIMARS missile unit and expressed gratitude for his role in assisting Ukraine and rallying support.
