Australian food writer, Tristan Lutze, told Aussie that we were doing it wrong all the time and missing a key ingredient.

We have bread and cheese, so what’s your toast missing?

He revealed that the secret to the perfect cheese toast is a layer of mayonnaise on the top of the bread.

Tristan explains that adding a layer of mayonnaise instead of butter to the outside of toast will help the bread cook more evenly when toasting.

It also reduces the risk of a cake burn that will inevitably spoil your toast.

The FSA warns that burnt toast may pose a cancer risk due to acrylamide, a chemical formed when starchy foods are cooked at high temperatures.

So make sure you toast and check in often.
