Your voice will sound completely DIFFERENT on Mars as scientists discover that the “speed of sound” is not the same on the Red Planet

THE speed of sound on the surface of Mars has been confirmed by scientists and the results suggest it would change your voice.
Nasa used equipment on its Perseverance rover to collect data on the Martian atmosphere and found that higher-pitched sounds travel faster there than on Earth.

The Martian atmosphere is not safe for humans to speak frankly, so future Martian settlers are unlikely to speak outside of carefully controlled habitats.
It’s still an intriguing concept, however, and Nasa even has an online tool you can use to test how your voice would sound on Mars.
The new study suggests that speaking or making music on Mars would provide a “unique listening experience.”
Researchers believe that higher-pitched sounds reach your ears sooner than lower-pitched ones.

The speed of sound is not universally constant and can be changed by things like temperature and density.
NASA explains: “If you were standing on Mars, you would hear a quieter, more muffled version of what you would hear on Earth, and you would wait a little longer to hear it.
“The atmosphere on Mars is completely different. But the biggest change in audio would be high notes, higher pitched than most voices.
“Some sounds that we are used to from Earth, such as whistles, bells or birdsong, would be almost inaudible on Mars.”
NASA’s new findings were unveiled at the 53rd Lunar and Planetary Science Conference.
The Perseverance rover used microphones and a laser to accurately determine the speed of sound on Mars.
The laser was able to trigger a perfectly timed sound for the microphone to pick up.
Researchers measured the time between the laser triggering and the sound reaching the SuperCam microphone.
They could compare this to results from Earth.
The results confirmed earlier predictions by NASA about the speed of sound on the surface of Mars.
This speed is about 240 meters per second.

Since the speed of sound changes with temperature, the NASA researchers were also able to close some gaps in temperature fluctuations with the experiment.
They also observed some temperature variations that need to be studied in more detail.
