CHILDREN in Kentucky can sign up for the $500 monthly payment right now – but you need to act fast.
The mayor of Louisville said a new program would provide much-needed money to those struggling.
The program is called YALift!, which stands for Louisville Adult Income for Conversion.
Hope is guaranteed income will provide financial foundation for young people.
Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer said in a statement: “It sounds too simple, but the answer to poverty is money.
“Poverty is a shortage of resources, often a systemic shortage of resources, not an individual failure.”
This money can be used for expenses such as rent, meals, school fees, housing or childcare.
“Anything that allows them more flexibility in planning and building their future,” Mr. Fischer added.
How much will each participant get?
Those selected will receive $500 a month for a year.
There are no constraints attached – meaning they can use it however they want.
This payment is intended to supplement, rather than replace, existing income and existing social safety net programs.
Organizers feel the projects recognize that the participants are experts in their own lives and need cash to achieve their goals.
Who is eligible?
Under the program, 150 young people between the ages of 18 and 24 will receive monthly cash payments.
They need to live in one of three neighborhoods: California, Russell, and Smoketown.
Organizers point to data showing concentrated poverty and large gaps in education, employment, home ownership, health and life expectancy.
Leaders believe that starting in these neighborhoods will make the biggest and most immediate impact.
Any interested youth have until Monday, February 21 to apply.
Participants will be selected at random from the pool of candidates.
In addition to receiving guaranteed income payments, they will participate in providing local data for a national collection of information on the concept’s impact on people and communities.
