Young mum, 20, dies after getting a £9 lip piercing in a back street salon, leaving her in a coma

A YOUNG mum has tragically died after later getting a cheap £9 lip piercing at a back street salon.

Andressa Souza, 20, spent 24 days in intensive care in Dourados, Brazil after her piercing became infected and she was in a coma.

The 20-year-old mother, who contracted sepsis from the piercing, died at Hospital da Vida on Saturday

Her devastated mother Maria Aparecida da Silva Oliveira, 47, told local media the infection entered her bloodstream and traveled to her brain.

She said medical professionals said the infection had affected 37 percent of her daughter’s brain, reports Diario do Nordeste.

Maria said her daughter paid £9 (BRL 60) for the piercing, but she has no idea if the facility is licensed to perform the procedure.

She said, “She didn’t mention anything to me about whether the person was a professional.”

Maria added: “Around June 13th she started to feel unwell, with a severe headache and fever.

“We thought it was dengue because there was an outbreak here in Itaporã.

“We took her to the doctor and up until then we thought that was it because my other son had it too.”

Andressa leaves behind a husband and a three-year-old son.

Maria said: “He is also heartbroken because, little as he is, he saw his mother in this situation. It’s very difficult for him.”

The woman was buried in the Cristo Redentor Cemetery on Sunday.

Last year, a 15-year-old schoolgirl died after pricking her own eyebrow at home.

And a woman who wanted a cute ear piercing was taken to the hospital instead.

Another woman spent six weeks in a foreign hospital after getting her ear pierced.
