You’ll be in the top 1% if you can spot the world’s most elusive sniper hiding on the mountain – there’s a helpful clue

By the time you spot the sniper, it’s already too late.

Somewhere in that hilly terrain is a perfectly camouflaged gunman, aiming at you, ready to pull the trigger.

The photo above was taken by artist Simon Menner, who received permission to observe snipers in action with the armies of Germany, Latvia and Lithuania.

It shows trees and bushes on a mountain and an almost invisible soldier taking position with a high-powered rifle.

If you look closely, you can just make out part of his scope – the only clue to his hiding place.

Adapting to the environment is as much a part of a sniper’s training as learning to hit a target from a mile away.

You must be able to survive alone or in pairs over rough terrain, digging holes for shelter.

And when the moment comes, they need to be ready – and all without being detected.

Simon spent six years following snipers on training exercises to capture their remarkable ability to blend in with their surroundings.

He watched them help each other create their “ghillie suits,” using natural elements like leaves and dead grass to match any landscape.

At first glance, his series of paintings called Disappearing Act appear to be silent and sometimes eerie landscapes, ranging from sunny meadows to mist-shrouded mountains.

A sniper lurks in every frame with his gun pointed directly at the camera.

In some images – including the one on this page – the sniper is only 30 feet away but still very difficult to spot.

In real life, the sniper would be at least a quarter mile from the target that had no chance of seeing them.

Need a hint? Look at the large bush in the center left of the image.

If you look out from behind you might just see a flash of the metal visor.

The sniper is circled in a follow-up image below.

Last week, a viral TikTok illusion video challenged viewers to spot the sniper hiding on a rocky mountainside.

Another shows a cloaked gunman in a forest clearing, invisible until he moves to reveal himself.
