ST. LOUIS – Missouri’s highest education agency talks about the challenges school districts face because of the two challenges that are the rise of COVID and the shortage of workers.

Mallory McGowin, communications director for the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), said school districts are having a hard time taking the quick test with results in 15 minutes. Instead, they have to rely on tests with results within 48 hours, which will keep teachers out of class for longer.

The shortage of workers means schools are scrambling for places to fill positions, so working teachers are having to do double duty.
