There are a lot of food hacks going on on TikTok.
But one thing has exploded since TikToker celebrity Emily Mariko shared it on her account last year, and it makes reheating rice so much tastier.
Video has been viewed more than 80 million times and garnered over seven million likes.
Almost everyone has seen the video of Emily making a bowl of salmon rice, but there is one trick, namely her use of it, that has garnered the most attention.
Emily used leftover rice to make a bowl and put an ice cube on top before putting it in the microwave.
Once the rice is hot, you can pour the ice cubes out and enjoy a perfect bowl of steamed rice.
Food Scientist Helen Conn says: “You should pay attention to the cooking tricks you see online. You don’t want to get hurt trying these hacks.
“And you need to be aware of harmful bacteria because food has to be prepared safely.”
Instead of melting ice, it helps steam the rice, preserving its fluffy texture without drying into a sticky dough.
NHS guidelines suggests that while reheating rice is not likely to cause food poisoning, you must ensure that the rice has been stored properly so that it does not become infected.
Leaving rice at room temperature can breed bacteria that cause vomiting or diarrhea.
The NHS website offers these tips on how to serve rice safely; serve rice as soon as it is done cooking, if that is not possible, cool the rice as quickly as possible (ideally within 1 hour), refrigerate the rice for no more than 1 day until reheating and when reheating Always check that the rice is completely hot and do not reheat the rice more than once.
