NBA Journey Hub Olden Polynice defended LA Lakers’ struggling defender Russell Westbrook on Thursday’s Spotify podcast episode of “The Odd Couple With Chris Broussard & Rob Parker.”
“You get 100% of Russell Westbrook every time you play.”
Russell Westbrook this season
After the LA Lakers’ big deals in August, they were considered playoff contenders. However, Los Angeles (21-21) has been a mid-range team all season. Westbrook, especially his great rotation rate, has been the focus of much criticism for the evils of the team.
Polynice, who has played for five franchises (with two appearances at the LA Clippers and Seattle SuperSonics) in 15 seasons in the NBA, is disappointed by this.
“He’s a Hall of Famer, he’s going to be, he’s one of the best players ever to play the game. One thing that I’ve always loved about Russell Westbrook, he never cheated on the fans.”
Standing with the most triple doubles in the NBA at 192, Westbrook is a notable force in the league. Although he is one of the most explosive players in league history, his pace often causes him to play out of control.
The Lakers needed Westbrook to learn to play at a slower pace and understand when to use speed to his advantage. A lot of his swaps were gratuitous passes over the stands, not just minor blunders on something from a pick or a tackle.
Regarding Westbrook, Polynice said:
“He lets outside noise get to him and you need to catch it sooner rather than later,” says Polynice.
Westbrook continued to play with a pace and intensity that amazed fans, but with his awkward play, he lost the ball too often. With Los Angeles so packed with veterans, it’s much easier to slow down and use the team’s collective basketball IQ.
While Westbrook is averaging 4.4 goals per game this season, that’s close to his career average of 4.1. Even while holding the NBA record for career goals per game, that mark is still something that Russ has always been known for and played above and beyond.
In fact, in his first 13 seasons, Westbrook was a nine-time All-Star and was MVP in 2017. He led the NBA in scoring in 2015 and 2017 and in number of times. tectonics in the years 2018 ’19 and ’21. Plus, as a member of the NBA’s 75th Anniversary team, Westbrook has proven to be one of the greatest players of all time.

Polynice was correct in saying that fans watch Westbrook 100% of the time, but it seems like those numbers may be dwindling lately. He needs to get the audience negativity out of his head and focus on playing the kind of basketball he’s famous for.
