There are so many codes and symbols on your TV set-top box that it can be difficult to keep up with them all.

Thankfully, they’re not as confusing as you might think, like Sky explain.

In fact, they are designed to be useful.

What do the letter codes on Sky TV mean?

They’re used to tell you things like accessibility, as well as visual and audio features.

There are things that most people are quite familiar with, like HD, for high definition, and UHD, for ultra-high definition.

Other common examples include S, for shows with subtitles and W, to see if a program is on the widescreen.

Among the less obvious are ADVERTISEMENT. This means audio descriptions, providing additional commentary especially for the blind or partially sighted, describing what is going on in the show or movie being watched.

The same, similar, SL means sign language, which is a special version that uses an on-screen signer.

Meanwhile, DS used if a program can provide surround sound, of course, as long as you have the right TV and speaker system.

What does the Sky TV rating code mean?

The Sky rating codes are quite similar to the BBFC’s standard grading system.

Including U, PG, twelfth, 15 and 18.

For those who don’t know, U which means all ages can watch, while PG (parental guide) says you should consider whether it’s appropriate for young children.
