Actress and editor Yakira Chambers has died at the age of 42.
Her preliminary cause of death has been identified as acute asphyxia, her family told Deadline.
Chambers was reportedly with her mother outside a mall in Newport Beach, Calif., when she began having trouble breathing and collapsed, the outlet reported Monday.
She was known as the story editor on NCIS: Hawaii and had acting roles on Insecure and The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl
NCIS: Hawaii will honor her in an episode that will air in January.
Chambers was also developing her own projects at the time of her death, including a TV pilot, Deadline reported.
The Chicago native is survived by husband Anthony Welch and mother Constance Chambers.
Her family said: “Her sudden and early death has affected us all deeply. Yakira was a light, a symbol of hope for our community, a steward of our culture and a representation of what it looks like to achieve your dreams.”
