AEW will crown a new interim world champion after CM Punk announced he will be out due to a recent injury.
Punk defeated “Hangman” Adam Page at last Sunday’s Double or Nothing to become the new AEW World Heavyweight Champion.
However, the straightedge superstar, who won his first world title in nine years, relinquished the belt on Friday’s Rampage show when he confirmed he had sustained an injury that required surgery.
AEW then announced that an interim titleholder would be decided at the AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door pay-per-view on June 26th.
This Wednesday’s Dynamite show begins with an over-the-top battle royal and the winner meets Jon Moxley in the main event to determine a No. 1 contender.
The winner of that fight is then expected to go head-to-head with Hiroshi Tanahashi to crown an interim AEW World Heavyweight Champion next month.
Whoever wins the belt will face CM Punk in a unification match at a later date once The Best in the World has recovered from his injury.
The American grappler was originally set to jeopardize his title against Tanahashi at Forbidden Door.
The 43-year-old former WWE Superstar didn’t reveal the nature of his injury but vowed he will be back.
Punk said: “Well, here’s the bad news – I’m injured and need surgery.

“A few things are broken. The biggest thing is my heart because I love nothing more than performing for you all and I wanted to make a damn good run. This is the bad news.
“The good news is that I can still do it all. I told you I would walk until the wheels fell off and the wheels are still there, they didn’t fall off.
“It’s just that one of them is broken. I’ve come back from worse times, I felt better than I did today, but I’m also here to tell you I’ve felt a hell of a lot worse.”
