Wright slams Souness over Giroud comments

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has fired at Graeme Souness after admitting he doesn’t rate Olivier Giroud.

Souness claimed he’s had a “huge bit of luck” in his career because Karim Benzema wasn’t active in many French teams and didn’t score and score enough goals at the last World Cup.

Speaking to The Ringer podcast, Wright replied: “We have to commend Giroud. He broke Henry’s [all-time France goalcoring record] and long may that last, although with Kylian Mbappe’s journey, it won’t be long now.

“The thing with Giroud, you see the complete lack of respect he gets. Graeme Souness was so disrespectful to him as a player and his goalscoring record. He gave him no credit.

“This guy was in the third tier of French football when he was 21. Arsene Wenger has said Giroud had to earn everything he has done up to this point.

“All Souness said was ‘He didn’t finish at the 2018 World Cup’. Giroud is essential for every team he has played in. Goals don’t define him.

“That’s what people like Graeme Souness don’t understand. He’s such an integral part of the team, he’s an integral part of what players like Mbappe and Dembele do.

“I don’t think there is a better goal man in the world, linking the game and scoring goals.”
