‘Polish Mourinho’

Poland coach Czeslaw Michniewicz has received World Cup advice from Jose Mourinho, Max Allegri, Steven Gerrard and Xavi on how to beat the French, SunSport’s Mark Irwin writes.

Michniewicz is reveling in his nickname ‘Polish Mourinho’ after delivering a defensive masterclass to guide his nation to the last 16 in Qatar.

He said: “When I hear all the criticism, I can only smile. Because all the teams that weren’t defensive in the group stage and easily let their opponents score are already back at home and watching on TV.

“We defended well and our reward is a game against the world champions. If we win against France we could become the next champions.

“The comparisons to Mourinho are out of date, but I’m just telling you that football is about winning trophies and being successful.

“I spoke to Mourinho, Allegri, Xavi, Steven Gerrard, Fabio Cannavaro and all the other coaches who helped prepare my players so well for this tournament.

“And I hope this isn’t my last chance to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. It’s always been our dream to get out of the group stage and we don’t care what our team thinks.

“December 4th is Barborka, the national miners’ holiday in Poland, and we will do our best to celebrate this day by beating a wonderful opponent.”
