WORLD CUP 2022 LIVE: Argentina top Group C after opening day loss, Poland advanced to Round of 16 on goal difference, Mexico eliminated

Martin Blackburn Halftime Record: Saudi 0 Mexico 0

Something has to give way here – or both teams leave the world championship tonight.

No one can doubt the efforts of both teams in a frantic first half played to a raucous crowd at the Lusail.

But the busiest man at the park was England referee Michael Oliver, who seemed to call for fouls every few minutes.

And the North East-based referee must have known what to expect from the two teams with the most yellow cards in the competition so far.

Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais made a couple of useful saves – one in particular to disappoint Alexis Vega early on.

But Mexico are still looking for their first goal of the tournament after two and a half games.

Herve Renard’s Saudis were well-trained as usual but may need to show more adventure in the second half if they hope to reach the knockout stages.

Ali Al Hassan’s header, which shot over the goal, was as close as possible to break the block.
