The Italian hotelier was living with his wife in Mexico and was driving his BMW to pick up two of their three daughters from school when the killers ambushed on July 1, reports La Stampa.

He was killed in a hail of bullets fired by two hitmen on a deserted street in Palenque, Chiapas state.

He was on his way to La Escriba school to pick up the girls, and the killers were reportedly hiding on a side street

The two suspected killers have been named by prosecutors as Gerardo Antonio and Luis Martín, while Elisabeth Tunesi is now being arrested and accused of organizing the attack.

Elizabeth is accused of ordering the murder for financial reasons, Italian news agency ANSA reports.

The arrests were made in the towns of Tuxtla Gutiérrez and Palenque.

Those arrested appeared before a judge in the city of Catazajá.

Originally from Milan, Mr. Tunesi developed an interest in the ancient Mayan culture of Mexico while studying law at university.

He moved to the country and built a holiday home there with the help of his parents before meeting his wife 20 years ago.

He then moved into the hospitality industry and became the owner of the five-star Quinta Chanabnal Boutique Hotel.

Reportedly, Mr. Tunesi was a highly respected member of the Italian community in Mexico, as well as a gifted linguist.
