He then closed the door and locked it before exiting the CubeSmart Self Storage in Murray, Utah, he allegedly told police.
After he left the area on foot, the storage unit caught fire, with the door remaining closed until firefighters managed to prize it open.
According to a police affidavit, the fire engulfed six storage units at the complex.
Wardell was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter and kidnapping.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.
According to local CBS affiliate KUTV, he had been released from prison the day before the incident for a parole violation.
The probation charge was based on a third-degree aggravated assault charge, and Wardell was convicted of criminal mischief.
He pleaded guilty to hitting his former girlfriend with a golf club and threatening him with a knife in December 2018.
Her family said in a statement: “Our daughter, Morgan Kay Harris, has always been known for her sweet, shy and kind temperament, she was a deep thinker with amazing artistic ability and always had an infectious giggle.
“She was a beautiful model and makeup artist and a successful medical assistant. She recently started a new job in the Draper area which she has been looking forward to. She loved her dog Huck, who went with her.”
