Woman arrested for fatal crash in Fort Myers last year

Fort Myers police have arrested a 51-year-old woman in connection with a fatal crash more than a year ago.

Fort Myers Police say community advice led to the arrest of Michelle Ochran, who was booked into the Lee County Jail Wednesday.

According to police, Paul Hanson was stabbed and killed on his way home from work around 8:30 p.m. on January 23, 2021. Hanson was crossing Fowler Street at the time of the accident.

WINK News spoke to Paul Hanson’s daughter, who is only comfortable texting but said she is still processing the latest developments in the case.

She said the news of the arrest is bringing back some very painful memories that she experienced when she lost her father about a year ago.

As for the woman accused of beating and killing Hanson, she was released from prison Wednesday afternoon. Her bond is set at $250,000.

WINK News reporter Justin Kase tried questioning her as she left the Lee County Jail.

She didn’t answer any questions and quickly tried walking away.

Investigators say Ochran hit Hanson as he was trying to cross a pasture just over a year ago. They say she never stopped, leaving him to die on the road.

Just days after the crash, police found the SUV that hit Hanson. Based on the address listed for Ochran on the Lee County Jail website, the SUV was found about half a mile from where she lived.

For the family of Paul Hanson. His daughter said, “this makes everything new again.”

She shared pictures of her father spending time with his grandchildren. She said anything that helps bring justice to ‘papa’ is what the family wants.

Ochran will return to court next month. She faces charges of leaving the scene of a death-related traffic accident.
