Wolves are looking to sign Argentina World Cup star Marcos Acuna in January but face a clash with Prem rivals

But Wolves are likely to face competition from other clubs in the Premier League and La Liga for the resilient defender.

Acuna’s current contract with Sevilla runs until 2025.

The club’s new boss, Jorge Sampaoli, a compatriot from Argentina, rested Acuna and his compatriot Papu Gomez for the last game before the World Cup.

But director of football Monchi wants to reshuffle his squad and Acuna, valued at £12million, is among the players Sevilla are willing to move on to generate cash.

Should Wolves land the defender, he will have to compete with Rayan Ait-Nouri and Jonny for a spot on the squad.

Lopetegui will know how to best use Acuna having spent two seasons in La Liga.

Wolves need a boost in the Premier League after struggling to get going ahead of the break for the World Cup.

The Molineux side are bottom of the table having won just twice in their first 15 games.

Wolves have picked up just one point in their last five games and are four points away from leaving the relegation zone.

They kick off their Premier League campaign on Boxing Day with a match against fellow contenders Everton.

But their first competitive game comes against Gillingham in the Round of 16 of the Carabao Cup.
