Wolves and Leicester in transfer battle to snap Sunderland’s highly-rated goalkeeper Anthony Patterson
SUNDERLAND keeper Anthony Patterson was due to leave for the Premier League in the summer – with Wolves and Leicester making him a prime target.
The 22-year-old has emerged as one of the best young stoppers and the high-profile pair will try him in the next transfer window.
While the Black Cats have promotion ambitions of their own this season, they could capitalize on their homegrown starlet and raise around £10million if they don’t move up.
Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui sees Patterson as the ideal choice to compete with and eventually take over from Portugal international Jose Sa.
Patterson may have to wait for his chance when he goes there and that will be part of the equation as he looks for his best options in the summer.
Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers is looking for a new long-term successor to Kasper Schmeichel, and Patterson is firmly on his radar.
He would certainly appreciate his chances of replacing Danny Ward from Wales when he joins King Power.
Patterson’s arrival would also make it easier for Daniel Iversen to move on, having only played two Premier League games since arriving in 2018.
Stoke is a longtime admirer of the club’s No.2 goalkeeper but was unable to sign him in last month’s window.
Patterson may find other admirers for him as well, as he sees the role after a dramatic rise to fame over the past year.

But both Wolves and Leicester are hoping to get ahead of the competition and land the North Shields lad from the North East.
The two Prem clubs were both impressive winners as they exited the drop zone on Saturday.
Wolves beat Liverpool 3-0 and new winger Tete inspired the Foxes to come from behind twice to win 4-2 at Aston Villa.
