With 3G mobile networks going away by 2022, buyers beware of older devices

Before you buy a used phone for a loved one this holiday season, you need to know why many are about to become obsolete and useless.

Carriers like AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and others will complete their 3G network outages in early 2022. So you’ll need to upgrade to a phone with at least 4G if you still want access or even call 911.

Turning off the network will allow further expansion of 5G.

AT&T’s website says, “When we close the 3G network, there will be no data or voice service for devices that are at least not 4G capable. This means that while some device features may still work, you won’t be able to access our network unless you upgrade to a newer device.”

Network outages can also affect other internet-connected devices such as older cars, medical equipment, home security systems, etc.

That’s something you’ll want to keep in mind before buying a used phone on Facebook Marketplace or eBay so you don’t leave your loved one with a useless phone next year.
