Wisconsin’s top election official, MILWAUKEE, said a lot of the criticism she received from Republican lawmakers was due to a lack of understanding of how the Wisconsin Elections Commission works.
Speaking with Mike Gousha from Marquette University Law School during a virtual show, Committee Administrator Meagan Wolfe said she’s proud of her efforts, as well as the efforts of the committee and secretaries. local elections, in running the 2020 election amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I think a lot of what is said is sometimes baseless for partisan purposes or it actually represents a complete misunderstanding of how the committee works, my role as part of the committee, and so I really have too much work to do. Wolfe said.
Republicans have taken issue with some of the guidelines the committee issued to local secretaries before the election, arguing that the guidance violated election law. Former lieutenant governor and current gubernatorial candidate Rebecca Kleefisch sued the agency last month suspend that instruction.
In October, the nonpartisan Legislative Audit Office issue an audit of the election, while it did not identify any common fraud, outlines 30 improvements the WEC could make and outlines 18 items lawmakers could consider changing.
Several lawmakers, including Assembly Chairman Robin Vos, have called for Wolfe and five of the six election commissioners to resign, while the others rushed to her defense.
On Friday, Wolfe reiterated that she has no plans to step down.
“I have a really important job to do, and that work is nonpartisan,” she said. “I am the administrator of a bipartisan committee appointed by the legislative leadership and the law requires me to be nonpartisan. It’s a tough job, especially in this climate. ”
Wolfe became an interim administrator in March 2018 and the state Senate unanimously confirmed her to a full four-year term in May 2019.
“The unanimous support she received at the time” was like her whole life before, she said.
