PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – By now, you’ve probably heard of the winter storm system heading from Sunday East to Monday.
One important thing to remember is that the main energy of this system is still outside the Pacific Ocean.
When we run out of energy, there are things we can see, but there are also things we cannot. Once this “low” hits shore, we’ll have the opportunity to gather more data from weather balloons and surface instruments.
This will allow us to tighten the projected path and have a better idea of how this will impact the Pittsburgh area.
However, without that information, we can infer some parts of this system. We know that a winter storm system will likely affect the eastern part of the United States. We know this is likely to happen in the area Sunday through Monday. What we don’t know is how exactly this will come.
It could be the difference between large, large, or more concentrated snowfall. The two main mid-range models we use are presenting two scenarios. The European model shows more concentrated snow from Pittsburgh to the east, while the US model shows a more widespread scenario.
You can see that these differences cause a big difference in how the snow moves in the area. KDKA meteorologist Ray Petelin would like to note that he has left total snowfall on these maps. The reason is that the expected number of models is inconsistent and that is one of the main things we have to wait to find out more.
That’s on par with winter storm systems. Although we know of a storm system that is developing and could disrupt our region, its magnitude and exact location is often not known until a day or two earlier.
As we better understand these factors, we’ll be able to put the numbers on the map, which will hopefully resemble the numbers on your driveway. Stay with KDKA-TV as we continue to watch this system roll out.
