HBO has released the first trailer for Adam McKayThe Lakers’ upcoming scripted series, fresh with an official new title: “Victory time: Rise of the Lakers Dynasty. Formerly titled “Showtime” for the “age of cinema” for the powerhouse team, during which they’ve won five championships, this new title isn’t quite the same but perhaps less more confusing because this is an HBO show. McKay is currently on the minds of viewers as his all-star satire “Don’t Look Up” hits theaters on December 10 and Netflix on December 24. Will that momentum carry him through another Whether the season will be successful or not is yet to be seen.
The first trailer offers an interesting look at the sports movie of the period, complete with a nostalgic 1980s color palette and fashion sense. The film also stars the newly revealed cast of Gaby Hoffmann, Jason Segel, Adrien Brody, Tamera Tomakili, Julianne Nicholson, Tracy Letts and Rob Morgan. They join the previously announced talented Jason Clarke as Jerry West, “the tortured basketball genius,” and frequent McKay collaborator John C. Reilly as the former Lakers owner. Jerry Buss. Newcomers Quincy Isaiah and Solomon Hughes play Earvin “Magic” Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, respectively, both of whom earned their first major credits with the series.
“Triumph Time” is based on the book “Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the 1980s Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty” by Jeff Pearlman. The series follows the personal and professional lives of the team members during the 1980s period. The series’ official diary is “one of the sport’s most revered and dominant dynasties – a team that defines its era, both on and off the field.”
The remaining cast includes Michael Chiklis as Red Auerbach, Sean Patrick Small as Larry Bird, Sally Field as Jessie Buss, Hadley Robinson as Jeanie Buss, Spencer Garrett as legendary Lakers broadcaster Chick Hearn, Delante Desouza as Michael Cooper, Olli Haaskivi as Nike co-founder Phil Knight, and Kirk Bovill as former Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling.
McKay will serve as the series’ director and executive producer, with Max Borenstein writing the script. Jim Hecht, Jason Shuman and Kevin Messick from McKay’s production company are also executive producers along with Scott Stephens and co-EP Rodney Barnes.
