Experts have warned THE THREAT from an underwater volcano off the Tonga Islands may not be over yet.
ONE Tsunami has been activated by a “violent” eruption from the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano on Saturday, causing massive 4ft waves.
Parts of the US, Japan and Australia have been put on high alert for the incident, while Pacific islands near it are besieged by ash, power cuts and communication problems .
But is that the worst of it?
Has Tonga Volcano Ended?
The volcano is located in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where some of the world’s most active volcanoes can be found.
It has had some minor eruptions recently but Saturday was a big one.
The thing is, this latest explosion is still very recent, so there’s still a lot that isn’t clear, especially since the area is covered in clouds of ash.
But scientists say this may just be a warm-up.
With plumes of ash about 20km high and shock waves felt thousands of miles away, they say an important large void known as a crater has been “awakened”.
“It’s not clear yet whether this was the peak of the eruption,” he said. Professor Shane Cronin, from the University of Auckland.
“It represents a large magmatic pressure release, which can settle the system.
“One caveat, however, lies in the geological deposits from earlier eruptions of the volcano.”
Geological deposits from past eruptions show that once every 1,000 years “multiple distinct explosive events” are involved, meaning even more explosions are possible.
“We could be in for a few weeks or even years on the massive volatile volcano from the Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha’apai volcano,” he said.
“For the sake of the people of Tonga, I hope not.”
However, any subsequent explosions are unlikely to be as powerful as Saturday’s explosion.
