The Blues‘owner – person with ties to the President of Russia Vladimir Putin – made the shocking announcement through an official club statement on Wednesday night.

And fans of the west London club were stunned by the news, with one tweeting: “Thanks for everything, Roman.”

And another said: “‘Will always be your empire.”

Abramovich‘s decision to sell Chelsea Russia illegally invaded Ukraine and a crackdown seems imminent on the nation’s oligarchs.

In an emotional statement, the 55-year-old said – who set up the foundation to help Ukrainians victim of the war, said: “I would like to address the media speculation of the past few days regarding my ownership of Chelsea FC.

“As I have said before, I always make decisions in the best interest of the Club.

“In the current situation, I have decided to sell the Club as I believe it is in the best interest of the Club, its fans, staff as well as its sponsors and partners. set.

“The sale of the club will not happen quickly, but will happen according to the procedure. I will not ask to repay any loans.

“For me, this has never been about business nor about money, but about pure passion for the game and the Club.

“Furthermore, I instructed my team to set up a charity, where all proceeds from the sale would be donated.

“The foundation will be for the benefit of all victims of the war in Ukraine.

“This includes providing critical funds for the immediate and urgent needs of victims, as well as supporting long-term recovery work.

“Please know that this has been an extremely difficult decision to make and it is with great sadness that I must part with the Club in this way. However, I believe it is in the best interest of the Club.

“I hope that I will be able to visit Stamford Bridge one last time to say goodbye to you all.

“It has been a once-in-a-lifetime privilege to be a part of Chelsea FC and I am proud of all our shared achievements. Chelsea Football Club and its supporters will always be in my heart.

“Thanks, Roman.”
