Wildfires near Grandfather Mountain continue to burn, 350 acre fire now 20% contained

ROSEBORO, NC (WNCN) — A wildfire in the mountains of North Carolina remains about 350 acres, and firefighters have made some progress in containing it, according to the U.S. Forest Service in North Carolina. .

An update provided by the USFS on Monday morning said that the fire is now 20 percent under control.

According to the USFS, the Lost Cove wildfire was discovered around 9:40 a.m. Christmas Eve when it was about 2 acres wide.

By Christmas Day, the fire had spread over 80 acres. Late Sunday morning The fire has exceeded 350 acres and is only 10 percent contained.

The fire at Nui Ba in Pisgah National Forest and about 1.6 km from the foot of Nui Ong.

The wildfire near Bee Mountain in a remote part of the Lost Cove Wilderness Research Area, 10 miles southeast of Linville, officials said. The fire remained about 350 acres as of Monday afternoon.

According to the US Forest Service, efforts to put out the blaze “were helped yesterday by short-lived light rain as well as higher humidity. These mild conditions allowed firefighters to complete construction of a fire line to protect private property near the Roseboro community. Minimal fire growth occurred on Sunday. The fire is expected to continue burning at low intensity south and east along Timber Ridge in the Lost Cove Wilderness Research Area until heavy rainfall is received.”

Several trails have been closed in the area:

  • Timber Ridge Trail (TR #261)
  • Lost Cove Loop Trail (TR #262)
  • Huntfish Falls Trail (TR #263)
  • Darkside Cliffs Trail (TR #272)
  • The Mountain to Sea Trail follows Gragg Prong between Roseboro and Pineola Roads.

Grandfather Mountain officials announced Sunday that the mountain attraction is open and the fire “has not affected park operations.”

Officials say 20 firefighters from the US Forest Service are battling the Avery County fires.

Authorities still don’t know the cause of the fire, but said it was “suspected to be man-made.”

The public is being asked to avoid reappearing in the Lost Cove Wilderness Research Area until the fire is completely extinguished.
