Each has its strengths and weaknesses, and any of them can win big. In the run up to the Oscars, we’re making a case for why each of them might be deserving of the grand prize.

West storyDirected by Steven Spielberg

A new adaptation of the classic musical by the group featuring Arthur Laurents, Stephen Sondheim and Leonard Bernstein, West story Subtly updated the story from the Academy Award-winning 1961 adaptation starring Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer. The 1950s received Romeo and Juliet chronicles a forbidden whirlwind romance between Tony and Maria, two teenagers with close ties to rival gangs: the White Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. As words speak of their attraction, they become the link of a gang war over the changing demographics of a Manhattan neighborhood, as the Sharks and Jets go head-to-head over who owns their neighborhood. they – and by authorization, the right to the American Dream.

The 1961 film is one of the highest-rated cinema musicals ever made, nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won 10 – with one of those Oscars going to Puerto Rican actress Rita Moreno as Anita. Remaking that classic is a brave move, but the filmmakers responsible – director Steven Spielberg, writer Tony Kushner and cinematographer Janusz Kamiński – are also among the most lauded of the films. their respective fields, and they are swinging for this one.

There’s no shortage of reasons. It’s absolutely beautiful to look at, choreographed and shot with such great skill that even those who know how to play it by heart can feel like they’re experiencing something new. Rachel Zegler’s first performance as Maria Vazquez was one of the best talent finds in a long time, and it was Ariana DeBose’s turn as Anita to live up to Moreno’s legendary performance and later. is a number. And subtle new additions to the script subtly advance the story in ways that remind us that despite the age of this story, it matters, as long as there’s truth to it.

The movie shares the same fundamental mistake as the original and the sequel: It’s a Puerto Rican story told by a group of white people. That said, the filmmakers made a concerted effort to select from the Latinx community, and they have a lot of untranslated Spanish in the dialogue, working to create the Puerto Rican community. In the movie feel more real and not just like wearing ethnic clothes. The film also stars a second lead, Ansel Elgort, who plays Tony, on two fronts: First, the real world allegation of sexual assault hit him last summer, and because of that, his performance fell sharply behind his co-stars, making Tony a charismatic vacuum in an energetic movie. Both are unfortunate rocks wrapped around a brilliant film, further complicating a work that is, in itself, a complex portrait of a community.

There are so many featured series, it’s hard to choose one, but West story of The best possible achievement is “Cool” – one of the worst numbers compared to the original – remade into a fight between Riff (Mike Faist) and Tony over a shotgun, and the future of Airplanes. Jet.
