Why isn’t Phil Mickelson playing The Masters this year?

PHIL MICKELSON is a three-time winner at Augusta and a popular figure on the tour.

The 51-year-old Lefty last won the Masters in 2010 and added a sixth major title to his trophy case last year with the PGA Championship.

But golf fans who have been looking forward to seeing him compete again in Augusta next month will be disappointed.

Why isn’t Phil Mickelson playing The Masters?

Mickelson is a fixture at The Masters and has not missed the tournament since 1994.

His three wins in 2004, 2006 and 2010 made him a fan favorite and he made 12 Ryder Cup appearances for Team US.

However, he will not play at this year’s tournament in Georgia.

In February 2022, an interview surfaced in which Mickelson admitted to using the proposed Saudi Golf League as leverage against the PGA Tour.

Excerpts from an unauthorized biography claimed the golfer called the Saudis “scary” but was willing to ignore their human rights record to force changes within the tour.

Saudi Arabia’s government has denied allegations of human rights abuses.

Mickelson was slammed for the comments and lost a number of sponsors including Amstel and KPMG.

In the wake of the backlash, the six-time Major winner announced he was taking a break from golf to be with his family.

Due to the extended hiatus, he missed the Player’s Championship and will include The Masters on April 7th.

In his February statement, Mickelson said: “Over the past 10 years I’ve felt the pressure and stress slowly affecting me on a deeper level.

“I know I haven’t done my best and I desperately need some time to prioritize those I love the most and work on being the man I want to be.”

Ahead of the start of Player’s at Sawgrass earlier this month, PGA Tour boss Jay Monahan was asked about Mickelson’s future.

He said: “[Mickelson] has said he is stepping down and needs time to think – this is something I and we will respect and honor.

“If he’s ready to return to the PGA Tour, we’ll have that conversation. This is a conversation I look forward to.

“I haven’t spoken to Phil since he made his comments and since he said he was stepping down.

“I think the ball is in his court. I would be happy to hear from him.

“But I’m having a hard time talking about the different scenarios that could play out.”

The Masters official website lists Mickelson as a “former champion who will not compete”.
