Why isn’t Italy at the World Cup?

The Azzurri are the most notable absentees from the World Cup alongside the likes of Norway and Egypt.

Mancini would have hoped to build on the foundations he laid after winning Euro 2020, but Italy have now missed two consecutive World Cups.

Italy had enjoyed an impressive qualifying streak for every World Cup between 1962 and 2014, failing to qualify for the tournament just once in their history before missing out in 2018.

The Blues missed out on defeat again in 2022, losing to North Macedonia in a playoff qualifier.

The winner then met Portugal, who emerged victorious and secured their place in the tournament in Qatar.

Italy will face England, Ukraine and North Macedonia in Euro 2024 qualifiers and hope to be at the next European competition to defend their crown before attempting to reach the 2026 World Cup.
