But eagle-eyed fans have spotted something odd in their acronym.
Why is the Moroccan abbreviation MAR?
You may have noticed during the tournament that the Moroccan abbreviation is MAR, not MOR as you might expect.
This is due to the large French influence in the country, while the country’s official languages are Arabic and Berber.
The French word for Morocco is Maroc – and the abbreviation MAR is therefore used for sporting events and as an official country code.
