Why is Mike Krzyzewski leaving Duke University coach?

Mike Krzyzewski, 74, officially retires as head coach of the men’s basketball team at Duke University, according to Stadium’s Jeff Goodman.

While at Duke, Krzyzewski led the Blue Devils to five NCAA Division I titles, 12 Final Fours, 15 ACC men’s basketball tournament championships and 12 ACC regular-season titles.

He also coached the US men’s national basketball team, which led to three gold medals at the 2008, 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics.

Who will replace Mike Krzyzewski?

Krzyzewski’s official successor will be former Duke player Jon Scheyer.

Scheyer was a former captain of the Blue Devils team in the 2008/2009 season.

He was undrafted in the 2010 NBA season and began training professionally four years later.

Scheyer was named the Blue Devils’ associate head coach in 2018.

Brad Stevens was in talks to replace Krzyzewski before the position was officially secured.

Stevens resigned as head coach of the Boston Celtics last year to become president of the team’s basketball department.

Stevens replaced legendary Celtic Danny Ainge, who resigned shortly after Boston was eliminated by the Brooklyn Nets in Round 1 of the playoffs on Tuesday night.

When Stevens was hired by the Celtics in 2013, he reportedly told the team he would stay “until they either fire him or call Duke,” the Fayetteville Observer reported.

Stevens is also known to have a close relationship with Krzyzewski, who allegedly helped bring Jason Tatum to the Celtics after telling him Stevens was “a great coach.”
