Why does the Indy 500 winner drink milk?

SOME sporting traditions are downright odd.

The Indianapolis 500 is a racing institution, with the annual race held at the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

And the race serves up a number of traditions that are honored year after year.

These range from the signing of “Back Home Again in Indiana” to hundreds of balloons being released in front of the Green Flag.

But one of the most unusual is the winner chugging a bottle of milk during their celebrations.

Why does the Indy 500 winner drink milk?

One of the 33 participants will continue this tradition on May 29th.

In fact, the race officials even ask each competitor BEFORE the race if they prefer 2% or non-fat milk.

The tradition dates back to 1933 when Louis Meyer enjoyed a glass of buttermilk after his second Indy 500 win.

Three years later, Meyer was back on top of the podium, this time eating milk from a large bottle.

This caught the attention of a Milk Foundation executive, who promised to make it an Indy staple.

Despite a post-war hiatus between 1946 and 1955, the winner, enjoying an ice-cold bottle of milk, has been an Indianapolis constant ever since.

Has anyone ever broken traditions?

Chaos reigned in the stands in 1993 as Emerson Fittipaldi celebrated his win with a bottle of orange juice.

The Brazilian owned an orange grove and it’s safe to say the American Dairy Association wasn’t very happy.

Some fans booed in the stands, but Fittapaldi soon after swapped the orange for milk.
