Since 2006, THREE NFL games have been held on Thanksgiving.


Before that, the Detroit Lions and the Dallas Cowboys had home games for years.
But the NFL added a third game from the 2006 season.
Why is it always Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions?
Because tradition.
The Dallas Cowboys began hosting games in 1966 and have continued to do so ever since.
The Detroit Lions followed the tradition in 1978 and began playing in the afternoon before the Cowboys’ games in the evening.
NFL chiefs decided to expand it to three games and share the game for other teams in prime time.
What TV channel are the games on?
FOX, CBS, and NBC each host a Thanksgiving game.
The Detroit Lions will be first at 12:30 p.m. ET, playing on either FOX or CBS.
The Dallas Cowboys home game at 4:30 p.m. ET also follows on FOX or CBS — whichever didn’t air the first game.
And NBC shows the primetime game live every year starting at 8:20 p.m.
