NFL teams are more socially responsible than ever.
A league initiative allows players to wear custom messages on their helmets during gameplay.
Fans watching TV will see messages like “Black Lives Matter” on helmets.
Here’s what you need to know about the initiative.
Why did NFL players write “Black Lives Matter” on their helmets?
Black Lives Matter can be worn by players to highlight social justice issues across America.
The NFL launched an initiative three years ago as part of its attempt to inspire community change.
Players can choose from one of seven stickers to place on their helmet to highlight issues.
What are the other messages players can choose?
There are a total of seven embassies that can be worn by players.
End Racism, Stop Hate, It Takes All of US, Black Lives Matter, Inspire Change and Say Their Stories were the first six approved messages.
The NFL added “Choose Love” this season as gun violence and hate crimes have risen across America.
What other social justice initiatives are there?
The NFL will stamp “It Takes All of Us” and “Inspire Change” in the end zones for a third straight year.
Weeks 15 and 16 also give teams an opportunity to highlight their community work for the year.

“This year we are expanding our efforts with the Inspire Change Changemaker Award, which recognizes a local social justice changemaker from each club market.
“Initiatives like NFL Votes, special grant awards to national and local nonprofits, the Social Justice Helmet Decal Program, expanded programming and content on NFL-owned and operated channels to highlight social justice efforts across the NFL family, and of course special ones Inspire Change weeks will also continue.”
