Why did the Nebraska Cornhuskers end their red balloon tradition?

While the upcoming NCAA football season may be months away, the University of Nebraska has already announced its plans for the red balloon tradition.

On May 23, 2022, it was announced that they would be suspending the tradition due to a global helium shortage.

The news was first confirmed by the school’s athletic director, Trev Alberts, during an appearance on the Nebraska radio program and Sports Nightly podcast.

“Acquiring helium today is a really challenging part of producing it, and it’s been hard to come by,” Alberts said on ESPN.

“So we were asked by the university to use the helium that we get as a university for medical purposes [University of Nebraska Medical Center] in Omaha. And so this year isn’t the first time we’re making the red balloons available at Memorial Stadium.”

While it’s still unclear what the school will do in place of tradition, Alberts added that Nebraska’s marketing department is working on alternative solutions.

When does the football season start in Nebraska?

The Cornhuskers finished the 2021-22 season in sixth place in West Big Ten scoring after posting a 1-8 conference record.

They will now try to change those numbers in the 2022-23 season.

Their season begins on August 27, 2022 with a game against Northwestern.
