Why is Andy Farrell the head coach of Ireland?

After a year as Saracens’s first team manager, Farrell joined England’s coaching team in 2012.

In 2013, he toured with the British and Irish Lions as defense coach in Australia, earning special praise from Warren Gatland.

Farrell was later sacked by new England manager Eddie Jones in 2015 after the Australian took over after being knocked out of the World Cup group stage.

Interestingly, son Owen would later become England captain under Jones after Dylan Hartley was dropped.

Partly as a result of England and the Irish Lions’ successful campaign, Andy Farrell was selected as defensive coach by former Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt in 2016.

He then helped the Irish win six countries in 2018.

Following the 2019 Rugby World Cup, Schmidt stepped down as head coach of the Ireland team, with Andy Farrell as his successor.
