Why did Abby Lee Miller go to jail?

Over the years, Abby Lee Miller has introduced the world to some of today’s biggest stars thanks to the success of Lifetime show Dance Moms.

While she was blessed with fame and fortune herself, she eventually found herself behind bars for eight months in 2017.

Why did Abby Lee Miller go to jail?

Dance Moms premiered in 2011 and aired for eight seasons.

During this time, Abby Lee Miller was in the midst of financial difficulties.

In October 2015, a Pittsburgh grand jury indicted her on 20 counts of fraud and accused Deadline of hiding over $755,000 in earnings from the popular reality series.

At the time, Miller had pleaded not guilty, but changed her plea in June 2016.

In May 2017, she was then sentenced to 366 days in prison.

“You weren’t honest, even when you knew you should tell everything, you still weren’t honest,” chief judge Joy Flowers Conti told Miller at the time, who was crying, according to Deadline.

“You kind of got into the world of fame and lost your moral compass,” she added.

In addition to the prison sentence, she also had to pay a $40,000 fine and a $120,000 judgment.

At the time, Miller’s defense team said they respected the judge’s decision, and Miller added that she felt “relieved” and “peaceful.”

Where is Abby Lee Miller now?

In 2018, Miller was released from prison due to her ongoing health issues, but has since reverted to her former life.

She has also been louder about her previous students, claiming they abandoned her when she went to jail.

In April 2022, Miller sat down with ET, where she called her students’ families, who cut off all contact.

“Shame yourself. Be ashamed of what I’ve done for you and your kids — and helped you make a lot of money,” she said of the Dance Moms’ families.

“You couldn’t come and see me for eight and a half months? You couldn’t send a card, a letter?”

She continued: “I got mail from children in other countries and somehow little girls of 12 and 13 found the address.

“They got their cards and letters from me and the people here that I taught their kids before the TV show – they were very happy customers before Dance Moms and then during the show they were stars, they were making money, they were at the top in the world – and you’re just gonna drop me?

“It’s not hurtful anymore because you realize very quickly who your friends are,” Miller added.

Miller later revealed that she now teaches dance classes to kids around the world via Zoom.

“I teach all over the world on Zoom, and I can critique and choose anything. Last night, at 1:00 a.m., well, not last night, but this morning I was teaching a kid in Australia and fine-tuning every step she did,” Miller said.

As Miller calls out her former students, there is one star that continues to shine and makes Miller proud.

That star would be JoJo Siwa, whom Miller called a “shining example” for the LGBTQ+ community.

“I always knew the world would be a more colourful, positive, sparkling place with a kind, loving, dazzling triple threat like you in it – a shining example for the kids out there to live their BEST lives every day,” said Miller said about Siwa in an Instagram post.

“You put your heart on the plate! (If you know that you know) I love you little one!!! Keep making me proud.”

In June 2022, Siwa even announced that she wanted to introduce Miller to the producers of So You Think You Can Dance, who were looking for a new host after Matthew Morrison was fired.

“I wanted so badly to propose to producer Abby Lee [Miller] but then I thought, ‘I don’t think they would think it was good [idea],'” Siwa told ET.

“I thought it was kind of a joke, but it would work just as well. She is a brilliant dance genius. I said, ‘But they’re in such a state like, what the hell are we going to do now’ that maybe I am [I] shouldn’t tease her now. Maybe shouldn’t.”

Morrison was eventually replaced on the show by Leah Remini.

Why is Abby Lee Miller in a wheelchair?

In 2018, Miller began a public battle with Burkitt’s lymphoma, a rare type of cancer.

As a result, she lost her mobility and had to be confined to a wheelchair.

Since then, Miller has found a new perspective on life, telling ET it’s changed “immensely.”

“I say please and thank you at least 100 times a day and to strangers. When you’re in a store and I’m stuck between the clothes racks, getting poked in the eyes by the edges of the hangers, I just drop things on the ground, dropping my car keys in the parking lot. All of these things become a huge problem. They’re problematic,” she said.

“It’s an effort for me to bend down and try to pick something up off the floor. I can do it but I have to lower my chair and lower my feet and I have to raise the armrest. I have to bend down and try to grab it.”

“I have such a respect for people with disabilities. I had no idea – none until I sat in the chair and you see me out – we met at a concert and I, like I said, I’m going to dinner, I’m shopping, I’m doing this, I do that,” she added.

“[I’m] thankful and thankful for the people in my life — the people who have stood by me through thick and thin through all of this,” Miller continued.

‘I love her very much, and for the stranger there’s an old Irish proverb about asking a favor of a stranger. People have been wonderful to me.”
