Whoopi Goldberg Suspended By ‘The View’ For Holocaust Comments

Whoopi Goldberg has been suspended from ABC’s See in the two weeks preceding her controversial comments about the Holocaust.

ABC News President Kim Godwin confirmed the suspension on Tuesday and release a statement: “Effective immediately, I will suspend Whoopi Goldberg for two weeks for her false and hurtful comments. While Whoopi has apologized, I have asked her to take time to think and learn about the impact of her comments. The entire ABC News organization stands in solidarity with our colleagues, friends, family, and Jewish community.”

Tomorrow’s episode of See will air with only four co-hosts: Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Sara Haines and co-host Tara Setmayer.

The uproar began on Monday of the ABC daytime talk show, during a discussion of the Tennessee school board’s ban on graphic novels. Maus, when Goldberg said that “The Holocaust is not about race … but about the inhumanity of man to man.” Her comment caused an immediate backlash from the Jewish community and beyond, and See welcomed several prominent representatives of the Jewish community the next day to explain why Goldberg’s comments were hurtful.

Goldberg issued an apology Monday night: “On today’s show, I said the Holocaust ‘is not about race, it’s about the inhumanity of man to man.’ I should say it is about both. As Jonathan Greenblatt from the Anti-Defamation League shared, ‘The Holocaust was about the systematic extermination of the Jews by the Nazis, whom they considered an inferior race.’ I stand to correct. Jews around the world have always supported me, and that will never waver. I apologize for the hurt I have caused.”

She also discussed the controversy on Monday Late Show with Stephen Colbert, said in part: “It upsets a lot of people, that was never my intention. I feel, being Black, when we talk about race, it’s a very different thing for me. So I said I think the Holocaust has nothing to do with race. And people were very angry and still angry. I get a lot of mail from people and a lot of real anger. “
