Who was Tire Nichols?

Tire Nichols, born June 5, 1993, was a civilian, FedEx employee, and photographer from Memphis, Tennessee.

He was the youngest of four children and has a four-year-old son of his own.

At a press conference, Tyre’s mother, RowVaughn Wells, recalled: “I know everyone says they had a good son and any son is good, but my son was actually a good boy.

“My son was a beautiful soul and he touched everyone. Nobody’s perfect, but he was damn close.

“Does that sound like someone the police are saying did all these bad things?”

Tire’s friend Nate Spates also told CNN: “He was a free-spirited individual, a gentleman who marched to the beat of his own drum.

“My wife said, ‘I just really like his soul, he has such a good spirit.’

“I’ll never forget when she said that, I’ll always remember it.

“I just hope that this really opens up an honest dialogue, and not a dialogue until the next one happens, but a dialogue for change.”

What happened to Tyre?

On January 10, 2023, Tire died from injuries sustained in an “official violence incident” that resulted in “profuse bleeding from severe beatings.”

Days earlier on Saturday, January 7, Tire was rushed to a local hospital after a confrontation ensued between him and five Memphis Police Department officers.

That night, local authorities stopped him on suspicion of reckless driving.

The obstruction to traffic led to a confrontation in which Tire had to flee on foot.

Eventually, law enforcement located the now-deceased victim and a second confrontation ensued.

Regarding the fatal incident, Tyre’s stepfather, Rodney Wells, told reporters at a news conference: “Our son ran away fearing for his life.

“He didn’t run away because he was trying to get rid of no drugs, no guns, none of that.

“He ran away because he was afraid for his life. If you watch the video you will see why he was afraid for his life.”

In a statement, Memphis PD chief Cerelyn Davis said: “This is not just a professional failure, this is a failure of basic humanity towards another person.

“This incident was heinous, inconsiderate and inhumane.

“In the spirit of transparency, you will see this for yourself when the video is released in the coming days.”

On January 26, 2023, five police officers were arrested in connection with Tire’s death.

The people were accused of:

  • Second Degree Murder
  • grievous bodily harm
  • Two counts of aggravated kidnapping
