Who was Tammy Wynette’s Stand By Your Man about?

Tammy Wynette was in a relationship with fellow country star George Jones when she wrote Stand By Your Man.

Though she claimed the tune was just a “pretty love song” and about no one in particular, it’s assumed it’s about him.

After auditioning George Stand By Your Man, whom she would marry in 1969, she didn’t get much support.

In a 1978 interview, Tammy said, “I went home and played it to George, and he didn’t like it.

“He didn’t know I wrote it, so I asked him what he didn’t like and he said, ‘I don’t know, I just don’t care about the song’.”

“It kind of made me start Stand By Your Man wrong, but I’ve grown to love it now.”

Released in 1968, right at the start of the women’s liberation movement, some took offense at the song, calling it “anti-feminist”.

They believed it told women to stay with their husbands despite his indiscretions.

Written in just 15 minutes, Tammy always insisted it had no social or political repercussions.

But the Women’s Lib insisted the song contradicted their entire cause, and they felt it demeaned women and placed them below men.

In her 1979 autobiography, Stand By Your Man – An Autobiography, Tammy defended the song’s meaning, writing, “I don’t see anything in this song that suggests a woman should sit at home and raise babies while she’s a man is goes out and raises hell.

“To me it means: support your husband; Show him that you love and are proud of him, and be willing to forgive him if he doesn’t always live up to your picture of what he should be.”

Stand By Your Man’s producer and co-writer, Sherrill, also defended the song in an interview, saying, “Stand By Your Man is just another way of saying ‘I love you’ without reservations.”

What other songs is Tammy Wynette famous for?

When Tammy wrote Stand By Your Man, the singer already had a slew of country hits.

Her chart-topping songs included “Your Good Girl’s Gonna Go Bad” and “I Don’t Wanna Play House.”

Actually a follow-up single to DIVORCE, which Tammy released as the title track of her third album in 1968, Stand By Your Man is about a very different approach to dealing with the challenges of marriage.

In her private life, Tammy has been married five times, four of her marriages ending in divorce.

Her third marriage, to George, lasted until 1975 and was known to be her most turbulent.

Although both were divorced, they continued to work together in the 1990s, even releasing the duet album One in 1995, three years before Tammy’s death in 1998 at the age of 55.
