On March 19, 2021, Nikki checked into a private hospital to treat her eating disorder after her desperate friends managed to raise more than £65,500 to start paying for life-saving care.
Her friends said at the time that the specialist clinic was her “last hope”.
Nikki’s mum Sue appeared on This Morning and said her daughter’s health battle was sparked when gyms were closed during lockdown as the star was afraid of eating out when she couldn’t work out.
She said: “With Covid it sounds crazy but things like gym closures have had an impact on her.
“In order for her to eat she needs to know she can exercise so when they closed it was quite a concern, including the isolation.
“I asked her if she would come and stay with me, but she said she has to be at her house.”
“She was (suffering from incurable loneliness), she felt very cut off and spent too much time alone with not enough to think about anything other than food.
“Everything came to an abrupt halt. She tormented herself through the year for Nikki, too, because she knew she had friends abroad and she would visit them.
“She spent a lot of time last year canceling holidays.”
Nikki has always been open about her battle with anorexia since she rose to fame in 2006’s Big Brother and released 2009’s autobiography Dying To Be Thin.
She had battled the disease since childhood and was first admitted to a psychiatric hospital at the age of 12 following a suicidal bid.
