Who Was Kevin James Loibl?

Kevin James Loibl was a resident of St. Petersburg, Florida who worked part-time at a local Best Buy.

At the time of Grimmie’s death, he had no history of mental illness but was reportedly living “like a recluse,” according to CNN.

His unusual inclinations included covering his bedroom windows with aluminum foil and hanging heavy curtains because of “an aversion to light”.

He was also a huge Grimmie fan and had become obsessed with her in the months leading up to filming.

Why did Kevin James Loibl kill Christina Grimmie?

Grimmie rose to fame on YouTube in the early 2010s after she started posting covers of popular songs.

She then released her debut EP, Find Me, which helped her YouTube channel reach one million subscribers.

The Just a Dream singer later became a household name after signing up for Adam Levine’s team on The Voice in 2014. This year she was third.

Despite the fame, she never forgot where she came from, which is why she often took the time to sign autographs and meet with fans, like she did on that fatal night at The Plaza.

Loibl was among the fans who attended the concert and meet-and-greet, and while meeting their celebrity crush may have been every fan’s dream, he decided to end her life instead.

In the months leading up to her death, his obsession with her grew to the point that he even believed they could have a relationship.

Those closest to him later recalled the obsession during police interrogations and even noted that he had made several drastic changes to his appearance before the concert.

In addition to losing nearly 50 pounds, he also underwent Lasik eye surgery, had his teeth whitened and got hair implants, according to CNN.

Police said the attack was premeditated, but a motive was never revealed, according to the New York Times.

What Was the Cause of Kevin James Loibl’s Death?

After Loibl shot Grimmie, her brother Marcus Grimmie heroically attacked him.

Police said that Loible shot himself during the fight.

While Marcus may have lost his sister during the shooting, he was credited with saving the lives of over 100 others who may have been injured.

“Very heroic actions by Marcus Grimmie to step in and it definitely could have prevented more deaths,” Orlando Police Chief John Mina said during a news conference via CBS News.

It’s unclear if Loibl intended to kill himself after shooting Grimmie, but according to Mina, he was found with two handguns, two loaded magazines, and a hunting knife.

He also reportedly had travel accommodations to and from the Orlando concert.
