Who was Joey Essex’ mother Tina?
Joey Essex’s mother, Tina, took her own life in 2001 after a battle with depression when Joey was 10 and his sister Frankie was 13.
The 32-year-old took to Instagram in March 2022 to share a childhood snap of him lying next to his beloved mother.
He captioned the pic: “It doesn’t get any easier but I’ll do it all for you. I don’t have to prove anything to anyone but your mother.
“I’ll keep trying to make you proud.”
He added: “Smile as much as possible. One day I’ll still see you again… happy birthday.”
how did she die
Sadly, Joey’s mother, Tina, took her own life when he was just ten years old.
The reality star says he’s still struggling because he never came to terms with his mother’s death in 2001, which came after a battle with depression.
He opened up briefly while attending Celebrity SAS Who Dares Wins in 2020 about her death.
Joey explained on the show, “I had a lot to deal with [stuff]. My mother committed suicide when I was ten, which was difficult.”
He continued, “It toughened me up a bit. I can not explain. It made me harder inside. I only started being able to speak openly about it three or four years ago when I said the word mom.
“I know my mother loved me. But it caused me trust issues. One day she was there, one day she was gone.”
You’re not alone
A life is lost to suicide in the UK EVERY 90 minutes.
It does not discriminate and touches the lives of people in all sectors of society – from the homeless and unemployed to construction workers and doctors, to reality stars and footballers.
It is the leading cause of death for people under the age of 35, more deadly than cancer and car accidents.
And men are three times more likely to commit suicide than women.
Yet it’s rarely talked about, a taboo that threatens to continue its deadly rampage if we don’t all stop now and take notice.
That’s why The Sun launched the You’re Not Alone campaign.
The goal is that we can all do our part to save lives by providing practical advice, raising awareness and breaking down the barriers people face when talking about their mental health.
Let’s all pledge to ask for help when we need it and to listen to others… You are not alone.

Where can I watch Joey Essex: Grief And Me?
In 2020, Joey made a BBC Three documentary in which he turned to therapy after realizing that grief is shattering his dreams of starting a family and finding true love.
He bursts into tears and says: “My mother loved me, but she left me. I just think to myself: if she loved me so much, why would she leave me?
“Imagine if I was with someone and I had children with them and I really loved that person and then they left me. I don’t know what to do.
“I think we’ll break up before we’re together. I push it away.
“I know I need to make a change now, so I’ve decided to seek help.”
The drama, titled Joey Essex: Grief and me, is available now on BBC iplayer.
