Who was Gwen Shamblin Lara?

Gwen Shamblin Lara – a mother of two – was a Christian nutrition guru who founded the Remnant Fellowship Church in 1999.

She was born in February 1955 in Memphis. Her husband of three years, actor Joe Lara, was also killed in the plane crash.

She is the author of The Weigh Down Diet, “a groundbreaking approach to weight loss,” according to the book’s description.

“People who never know when they’re hungry and who can’t control their nightly binge eating have learned through the Weigh Down Workshop that they can eliminate irresistible food cravings,” the Amazon summary reads.

“This is not a diet like others because it is not food-centric.”

Chapters include “It’s Not Genetics or Your Mom’s Fault,” “I Feel Hungry All the Time,” and “How to Eat Potato Chips and Chocolate.”

The Remnant Fellowship Church is located in Brentwood, Tennessee.

The church has, according to the organization’s website, “an international fellowship of people who are finding renewed hope, deep love, and deep purpose by putting into practice the pure teachings of Jesus Christ.”

What happened to Gwen Shamblin Lara?

The author was one of seven people to die in a plane crash in May 2021.

A Cessna C501 crashed into Percy Priest Lake near Smyrna, Tennessee after taking off from a nearby airport around 11 a.m. on May 29.

“Our efforts have evolved from a rescue effort to a recovery effort. … We are no longer searching … for living victims at this time,” Rutherford County Fire Department Captain Joshua Sanders said.

The seven killed were Brandon Hannah, Gwen and Joe Lara, David L. Martin, Jennifer J. Martin, Jessica Walters and Jonathan Walters.

The small plane was reportedly scheduled to fly to Florida’s Palm Beach International Airport.

The plane was registered to JL&GL Productions LP, which the Laras owned jointly, according to the WTVF.

Gwen’s daughter Elizabeth Hannah reportedly texted members of the Remnant church asking for prayers.

She said the plane had to crash “for a controlled, quick landing,” according to the outlet.

Hannah said the Laras were on the plane with other church leaders.
