Who was Gail Katz?

Gail Katz was born on March 8, 1956 and was 29 years old and living in New York City.

Her loved ones remember her as a “beloved daughter, granddaughter and sister” who is “in our hearts forever.”

Gail’s tumultuous marriage to Robert Bierenbaum is the subject of Kieran Crowley’s The Surgeon’s Wife.

The true crime book became a New York Times bestseller.

What happened to Gail?

On July 7, 1985, Gail was reported missing, but it turned out; she was already dead.

According to her husband Robert’s account of the day, Gail did not return to her Manhattan apartment after leaving to recover from an argument they had earlier in the day.

On October 24, 2000, Robert was found guilty of the second-degree murder of his wife, Gail.

On November 29, 2000, he was sentenced to 20 years to life imprisonment.

Bierenbaum remains incarcerated at Sing Sing Correctional Facility.

Although Bierenbaum maintained his innocence for 20 years, he later confessed to Gail’s murder at his December 2020 parole hearing.

Obtained in a transcript from abc newsthe convicted killer admitted in court: “I wanted her to stop yelling at me and I attacked her.”

He stated that he strangled his wife to death because he was “immature” and “didn’t understand how to deal with his anger.”

The licensed pilot described disposing of Gail at sea after the assassination; Her remains were never recovered.

“I flew. I opened the door and then took her body off the plane over the sea.”
