Who was Dametrius “Meechie” Walker?

Dametrius “Meechie” Walker was a standout high school football player and an honorary member of the University of Michigan football team.

He made his name playing defensive end at Muskegon High School in Muskegon, Michigan and dreamed of playing at his local university after graduating.

“The team, the coaching staff, just the way they did things,” ESPN’s Walker told Gene Wojciechowski via ESPN.

“I just love the way they carry themselves.”

He has also been studied by several other top-flight schools, including Kentucky and Michigan State.

What was the cause of Dametrius Walker’s death?

Walker had plans to play football in college, however those plans were put on hold in November 2020 after he was diagnosed with cancer.

He underwent surgery at the time and received nine months of chemotherapy, but the cancer returned in 2021 and doctors had to amputate his left leg. It later took his life on December 9, 2022.

“It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of Dametrius ‘Meechie’ Walker after a brave battle with osteosarcoma,” his team said in a expression.

“Thank you all for your support. Please continue to send prayers and positive vibes to his family at this time.”

Michigan Football also published a expressionand said: “We are heartbroken to learn of the death of Dametrius Walker. Meechie has been an inspiration to every member of our program and the Michigan family as a whole. He will be missed by so many.”

Walker was survived by his mother Leona Bell and two-year-old son Kymere.

After the news broke, several NCAA football fans took to social media to offer their condolences to Walker’s family.

“RIP Meechie. At this time nothing but love for you and your family. A truly special young man,” wrote one user on Twitter.

“Rest in peace, Meechie Walker. My heart breaks for him and his family,” added another.

Wolverines player Brad Robbins was also among those commenting on Walker’s death. Write: “We have lost a true embodiment of what it means to be a Michigan man. Meechie and I texted weekly about his experiences and outlook on life.

“Whenever he was in our facility and around our team he was so positive and always had a huge smile on his face.

“…I hope to whatever we can celebrate we have the life and positivity that he brought to those around him,” he added.
